How Our Leisure Time Has Been Redefined by Technology (Social Media/Video Games)

This has nothing to do with video games. This has everything to do with escapism. For the vast majority of individuals I know, life stinks. Nobody is pleased, and everyone is devoid of hope.

The elder generations simply do not seem to understand that the future for young people in the Western world is exceedingly dismal.

Our economy is in shambles. The ultra-rich have cashed our paychecks, leaving us to fight over leftovers. What few employment left for young people (particularly the impoverished) are in risk of being completely mechanized. Taxis, transportation, and deliveries, for example, are expected to become totally robotic within the next 20 years. That's millions upon millions of people, not to mention the collateral damage.

These jobs do not pay well... in fact, they do not pay at all. I've never worked harder than when I was paid $8 an hour. With no breaks, it's highly labor hard and exhausting. Compare this to a 60k office worker who spends half his day on Reddit. People haven't seen a meaningful rise in 40 years.

As a result, low-wage occupations are destroyed. What exactly do you expect them to do? Become engineers overnight? No way, they'll end up fighting over Walmart shifts.

Not to mention how meaningless the majority of occupations are. The exploitation of labor. I've met around 1-3 young individuals who enjoy their work.

Long-term relationships can be difficult to build because you are expected to relocate frequently, sometimes across the country, for a job. There is almost no sense of belonging.

Everyone understands that businesses and the ultra-rich have fully hijacked our political system, and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Most young people have lost trust in democracy, owing to the fact that ours is a corrupt, letter-of-the-law democracy rather than a democracy in spirit. Perhaps it has always been this way, but it is suddenly obvious and unmistakable.

Everyone knows that unless they have money, neither party has them in mind. Personally, I feel Sanders was unique, which is why the party crushed him.

Our traditions, which held us together and provided us with a sense of identity, have been shattered. Religion is often quite reassuring. The thought that there is a paradise is simply lovely. Young folks no longer believe that. So whatever that held us together is gone. Then there was nationalism. Then followed the onslaught of PC culture, which has been... on second thinking, let's not go there.

Everyone understands that profiteering jackals have taken over the basic requirements of existence, such as medicine, education, and food. My college's president was paid $4 million each year. Almost nothing is inexpensive. We share a house with housemates. For fucks sake, we can't afford children.

The globe has been explored. There is no longer a frontier or an exciting wilderness. Everything is dying at an unparalleled rate. The options for escape (for the impoverished) are limited. You can't just start a new life because of the internet and better government processes. Aside from the French Foreign Legion, I don't know how you can leave your life behind.

There is no grand foe to battle, and there is no feeling of national purpose. The only adversary I can think of is strengthened by combat.

Assume you do get a high-paying job. If you have half a brain, you'll recognize you get paid to screw people over. Can you put up with that?

The news has no credibility and is always presenting a violent and fearful narrative. Political news is purchased and paid for.

If you do manage to scrape by, it can all be wiped out in the blink of an eye when the economy falls again for the same reasons it always does but no one repairs.

We live in a period when the most dreadful consequence of disease is the bill, and the guy who goes to prison is typically the biggest victim of a crime.

Can you blame the youth for wanting to go away from a country like this?
